Hand-washing and the use of disposable gloves and masks are universally recognized hygienic processes. Despite this fact, many scientific studies show that as much as 50% of sanitary personnel rarely clean or disinfect their stethoscope, some of them just once a week. That percentage is further reduced to 10-20% considering those who disinfect the stethoscope before using it on each patient. It is known that contamination deriving from stethoscope microorganisms increases exponentially after each visit; an improper cleaning of the stethoscope membrane contributes to elevate the risk of contamination between patients, and, consequently, the possibility of contracting infectious illnesses. In Europe and in the USA, the annual costs caused by the Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) amount to approximately 40 billion dollars, an enormous figure that is not available for other important activities - prevention, most of all. Recent scientific studies realistically link 5%-7% of HAIs to the use of the stethoscope. Hands, are generally thought to be the principal vehicle of contamination, but recent clinic research (MAYO CLINIC) show that the stethoscope is often more contaminated than the hands. UV-C LED devices, in their pocket and desk versions, can represent an automatic, economic, effective and efficient solution for the disinfection of the stethoscope membrane.

LED UV-C: EFFECTIVE IN JUST A FEW MINUTES

Thanks to a cutting-edge technology, Stet Clean and Stet Cube, are the first devices in the world to employ germicidal UV LED.
Traditional disinfection methods are currently limited to wiping the stethoscope membrane with a 70% solution of isopropyl alcohol, soapy water or other chemical disinfectants. For the first time, the innovation introduced by Stet Clean and Stet Cube revolutionizes the practices linked with the use of the most common medical instrument through the application of UV-C LED technology. The germicidal action begins immediately, as soon as the devices come in contact with the stethoscope: the UV-C LEDs are activated by a series of sensors and the disinfection of the membrane begins, thanks to the emission of a specific length UV-C wave that deactivates the pathogen microorganisms’ DNA. The unique, patented, geometric configuration of the Stet Clean and Stet Cube cones, allows the membrane of the stethoscope to be efficiently disinfected. Laboratory trials have shown how in just 60 seconds this technology is able to deactivate 85.5% of E. faecalis, 87.5% of S. aureus, 94.3% of E. coli, and 94.9% of P. aeruginosa (AJIC – American Journal of Infection Control); increased exposure times guarantee even higher levels of disinfection (more than 99%).
